Professor Alier Maker Ghai Duk was born on 20 December, 1982. He holds a Doctorate Degree in Economics with a specialization in Finance from the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing, China.
On 7 January 2026, he was appointed by the President of Republic of South Sudan who is the chancellor of public universities as the fifth Vice Chancellor of Rumbek University of Science and Technology. Proceeding to this appointment, Professor Alier previously served in numerous significant administrative assignments at the university, including Dean of Libraries, Director of Quality Assurance, Executive Director in the Office of the Vice Chancellor, Acting Head of Department, and faculty member in the College of Economics and Social Studies.
In 2023, Professor Alier was nominated as the Interim President of the South Sudan Quality Assurance Chapter by the then Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Gabriel Changson Chang. In this role, he represented South Sudan as country representative in the East African Higher Education Quality Assurance Network (EAQAN). EAQAN was established by the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) in 2012 to benchmark, trained and share best practices among universities across seven member countries in the region.

Academic Strive
Professor Alier Maker Ghai Duk is proficient academic and administrator with substantial knowledge in higher education, quality assurance, and institutional governance.
He began his formal education in 1995 at Dig-root Primary School in Baidit. However, due to the then frequent interruptions by the war of liberation and limited learning opportunities in the bush schools, Professor Alier decided to move to Kenya, where he completed his primary education at Raja Primary School, earning the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2001. He progressed to Bortown Secondary School in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya, where he attained the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2005.
In 2007, Professor Alier commenced his higher education at Tracom College in Nakuru, Kenya. He obtained both a Diploma and an Advanced Diploma in Business Management in 2009 from the Association of Business Executives (ABEUK), a renowned professional body. In the same year, he was admitted to Graffins College in Nairobi, Kenya, which was affiliated to Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT), Malaysia. He graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA).
Professor Alier further advanced his academic qualifications by enrolling in a Master’s program at Kampala International University (KIU) in 2012, where he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a specialization in Finance and Banking. He later pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics with a concentration in Finance at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing, China, under the supervision of Professor Shu Jinghong. His doctoral dissertation was titled “Determinants of Microfinance Sustainability and Outreach to the Poor: Evidence from Microfinance Institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa.”
Before his appointment as a lecturer at Rumbek University of Science and Technology in 2015, Professor Alier taught at the Catholic University of South Sudan, where he continues to serve as a visiting lecturer.

Teaching, Research and Publications
Professor Alier has over a decade of teaching and research experience. His research interests include microfinance, monetary policy, banking, and macroeconomics, where he has made extensive contributions to knowledge and academic literature. Below are some of his research contributions.
